Forgiveness and Atonement are often thought to be the same thing (to our detriment) but are two different and necessary processes required to re-connect us back to God. Atonement is the missing ingredient needed in our lives to bring us back into relationship and completely heal and remove the effects of sin. Forgiveness cancels the debt but only Atonement fixes the relationship and heals the damage and pain from the effects of sin.
